1. What Are Cookies
A cookie is a small text file that a website places on your device when you visit it. Cookies let a site remember information about your visit — such as your language preference, your login state, or the fact that you already accepted a notice — so it can be more useful to you next time.
Related technologies, like local storage, session storage, web beacons, and pixel tags, work similarly. Throughout this policy, when we say “cookies,” we mean all of these.
Cookies generally fall into a few categories:
- First-party cookies are set directly by SkillNut when you visit our Site.
- Third-party cookies are set by outside services we use (like payment processors or security providers) to make features work.
- Session cookies are deleted when you close your browser.
- Persistent cookies stay on your device until they expire or you delete them.
2. How SkillNut Uses Cookies
We use cookies to make SkillNut work, keep it safe, and improve it over time. Below is a description of the categories currently active on our Site.
Essential Cookies
These are strictly necessary for the Site to function. Without them, features like signing in, submitting a form, or completing a payment would not work. Because they are essential, they cannot be turned off in our system.
Examples include:
- Authentication tokens — after you sign in, we store a signed session token in your browser’s local storage so you don’t have to re-enter your credentials on every page. This includes your access token and refresh token.
- Session state — a small identifier that ties your requests to your active session.
- Security tokens — anti-forgery tokens that protect forms from being submitted from other sites without your knowledge.
Functional Cookies
These remember choices you make so the Site behaves the way you expect. For example, if you switch to dark mode, we remember that setting for your next visit.
Examples include:
- Theme preference — light, dark, or system-based color scheme.
- Terms acceptance — whether you have accepted our Terms of Service, so we don’t ask you again.
- Signup intent — during registration, we briefly remember whether you’re signing up as an individual or a company.
Functional cookies are set only when you interact with a feature that requires them.
Analytics Cookies
At present, SkillNut does not use third-party analytics cookies. We may add limited analytics in the future to understand how visitors use our Site — for example, which pages are most popular, or where new users get stuck. If we do, we will update this Cookie Policy and offer you a way to opt out where required by law.
Advertising Cookies
SkillNut does not currently use advertising or marketing cookies. We do not run tracking pixels for social networks or serve targeted advertising to you across the internet.
3. Third-Party Services That Set Cookies
Some parts of SkillNut rely on outside services. When you use those features, those services may set their own cookies on your device, subject to their own privacy and cookie policies. We only work with providers we consider necessary for the Site to function properly.
Google reCAPTCHA
To protect our sign-in, registration, and other forms from automated abuse, we use Google reCAPTCHA v3. Google may read and place cookies to distinguish humans from bots. Your use of reCAPTCHA is subject to Google’s Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.
Google Sign-In
If you choose to sign in or register using your Google account, Google will set cookies to authenticate you and return you to our Site. This is only triggered when you click the “Sign in with Google” or “Register with Google” button.
Stripe
Payments are processed by Stripe. When you complete a subscription checkout, Stripe sets cookies to prevent fraud, remember your session on their hosted checkout page, and process your transaction. These cookies are governed by Stripe’s Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy.
We never receive or store your full payment card details on our servers; that data goes directly to Stripe.
4. Managing Your Cookie Preferences
You have several ways to control cookies on SkillNut.
Browser Controls
Most browsers let you view, block, or delete cookies through their settings. Look for the “Privacy,” “Security,” or “Cookies” section of your browser’s preferences. You can usually choose to block all third-party cookies, delete existing cookies, or set your browser to prompt you before accepting new ones.
Keep in mind that if you block essential cookies, some parts of SkillNut may not work — for example, you may not be able to stay signed in, or certain forms may fail to submit.
Opting Out From Third Parties
For third-party services described above, you can manage cookies directly through those providers:
- Google reCAPTCHA and Google Sign-In — manage cookies through your Google Account privacy settings.
- Stripe — manage cookies through Stripe’s privacy portal.
Clearing Local Storage
Some data — like your authentication token — is kept in your browser’s local storage rather than a traditional cookie. You can clear it through your browser’s site data settings, or by signing out of SkillNut.
5. Do Not Track Signals
Some browsers offer a “Do Not Track” (DNT) setting that sends a signal to websites asking not to be tracked. Because there is no industry-wide standard for how sites should respond to DNT signals, SkillNut does not currently change its behavior based on them. We treat all users’ privacy consistently regardless of whether DNT is enabled.
If a legally-recognized universal opt-out signal becomes widely adopted — for example, Global Privacy Control in jurisdictions that require honoring it — we will honor it as required by applicable law.
6. Cookies and Your Privacy Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights over the personal information cookies collect. Those rights are described in our Privacy Policy, including how residents of California, the EEA, the UK, and other jurisdictions can exercise them.
Blocking or deleting cookies does not remove any data we already hold about you. To request access, correction, or deletion of your personal information, please see the relevant section of our Privacy Policy.
7. Changes to This Cookie Policy
We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time as we add features, change our services, or as legal requirements evolve. When we make material changes, we will update the “Last Updated” date at the top and, where appropriate, notify you through the Site or by email.
